Hosta (genus)
Hosta is a genus of perennials of the family Liliaceae by conventional classification, or by Agavaceae APG II. This genus has sometimes been placed also among Asparagaceae or Hyacinthaceae.
History
The name was given to the Hosta genus in 1812 in honor of the Austrian botanist Nicholas Thomas Host. The Japanese name Giboshi either genus name, funkier (given in 1817), also used as a common name, can be found in some ancient texts. Today the name of Hosta was formalized because of its prior, as is the rule of botanical nomenclature. The English call the hosta "plantain lily" because of the shape of its leaves with parallel veins reminiscent of the weed.
Hosta plantaginea Although originates from China, the most widespread species in Western gardens were introduced from Japan to Europe by Philipp Franz von Siebold in the middle of the nineteenth century. New species have since been discovered on the Korean peninsula.
